Winnie Madikizela-Mandela the former wife of Nelson Mandela has died at the age of 81 following a long illness, earlier this year she was hospitalised for a kidney ailment and exhaustion and had been in and out of hospital due to knee and back surgery. Winnie married Nelson Mandela in 1958 before he was jailed for activism and they had two children together, they were married for 38 years, 27 of those years Nelson spent in prison. During his time in prison Winnie fought for his release and worked as an activist herself campaigning for the rights of black South Africans. Winnie and Nelson divorced in 1996 however they remained close until his death back in 2013.
